Yesterday, the BRICS issued a joint statement, addressing the “Escalation of the Security Situation in the Middle East Following the Military Strikes on the Territory of the Islamic Republic Iran.” Issued less than two weeks before the July 6-7 BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the statement expresses “grave concern” over military attacks on the Islamic Republic of Iran, beginning June 13, which violated international law and the UN Charter and subsequently “escalated “the security situation in the Middle East.”
These events have led to “rising tensions and unpredictable consequences for international peace and security, as well as for the world economy,” the BRICS warns, and stress the “urgent need” to break the cycle of violence and restore peace, encouraging “existing channels of dialogue and diplomacy with a view to de escalating the situation and resolving differences through peaceful means.” Special concern is expressed over attacks on peaceful nuclear installations, in violation of international law, the UN Charter and “relevant resolutions” of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
