Karol Nawrocki from the conservative PiS party won the Polish presidential election with 51% of the vote, defeating the pro-EU candidate, Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzskowski, who was heavily supported by Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The previous President was also a member of the PiS party (Law and Justice). Tusk was formerly president of the European Council. Nawrocki, supported by Donald Trump, in the past has supported assistance for Ukraine but does not think Ukraine should be in the EU or NATO.
There have been large demonstrations of Polish farmers, supported by the PiS, protesting the import of cheap agricultural products from Ukraine. Contributing to Nawrocki’s election win has been broadening dissatisfaction from the Polish population due to the large number of Ukrainian refugees (1.6 million applications in 2023).
