Former Iranian Ambassador Repeats Call for Diplomacy, Issues Stern Warnings on CNN

Former Iranian Ambassador to Germany, Seyed Hossein Mousavian has repeated calls for a diplomatic solution to the Israeli instigated war while issuing stern warnings of the consequences of the continued sabotage of diplomatic efforts. Mousavian who is a recent contributor to the International Peace Coalition spoke on June 20th to CNN from Stuttgart.

In response to a question concerning the mooted United States attack on the Iranian Fordow facility, Mousavian pointed out that even such an attack would not end Iran’s nuclear program. “Because you cannot kill and destroy the know-how and technology” he stated. Mousavian pointed to the fact that the war on Iran made on the pretext that Iran is developing a nuclear bomb is illegitimate, and illegal, because Iran is a compliant member of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), does not have a nuclear weapon, unlike Israel, which has 100 to 400 nuclear weapons, and has provided total access to the International Atomic Energy Agency and passed all U.S. intelligence assessments in this regard.

But, the current dynamic may be designed to push Iran toward nuclear deterrence capability. As a result of U.S. withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal and imposition of severe sanctions “in return, Iran increased the level and the capacity of its enrichment. Therefore, if we are today in a situation where Iran has one or two weeks to break out, this is because of the U.S. violation of the nuclear deal. That’s why I think the best is to go back to diplomacy rather than war.…” He continued: “… what the U.S. is practically telling Iran is that if you accepted a deal, if you had the best cooperation, if all technical issues were resolved with the IAEA, which was resolved, if all possible military dimension issues were resolved, it doesn’t matter, we withdraw and attack you. And now the war by the Israelis, a nonsense war. This narrative is telling Iranians: you know what? Even if there is transparency, even if all nuclear ambiguities are resolved, the U.S. and Israel would attempt to bring regime change. That’s why you Iranians need nuclear deterrence, which is a nuclear bomb.
