A German Bundeswehr brigade is to be fully operational in Lithuania by 2027. It will be the first large-scale unit in the history of the Bundeswehr to permanently deploy up to 5,000 German troops to the state on NATO’s Eastern flank.
Brig. Gen. Christoph Huber, commander of the brigade, claims the threat situation in the Baltic NATO states was “very high,” telling t-online portal, “We are here to defend NATO alliance territory.” With regard to possible threats from Russia, Huber explained: “We are preparing for everything.” Exercises and training would be specifically geared towards enemy capabilities. “We show that we have mastered our craft. We are professionals in what we do. That is an important message to Russia.”
