Prominent Israeli journalist Gideon Levy mocked the sanctions threatened by five countries which normally tolerate Israeli systemic human rights violations. The threat of sanctions came from four of the Five Eyes countries—the U.K., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand—plus Norway. The targets of the sanctions are Israeli government ministers, war criminals Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben-Gvir.
Levy wrote tongue-in-cheek about how harsh this announcement is, and how it will likely bring about peace. “Naughty, naughty Bezalel and Itamar, tsk, tsk, tsk. The two bad boys of Israel will stand in a corner,” he wrote sarcastically. Levy, in his regular columns in Haaretz, has been one of the sharpest critics of Netanyahu’s ethnic cleansing.
