Thousands March in Madrid against EU's Rearmament and War

The Madrid Assembly against Rearmament and Militarization, a coalition of more than 70 groups, held a rally in Madrid last Saturday against the EU’s insane “rearmament” drive, in which the Spanish government is complicit. Attended by 6,000-8,000 people, it was the largest anti-war protest in Spain in some time, demonstrating that the lock-step anti-Russia narrative which had dominated even the left in Spain after February 2022 is beginning to unravel.

“We view with concern and anger the warmongering drift that EU leaders and governments have embarked upon, trying to drag the peoples of the continent into it,” the call for the rally stated. “The hidden objective behind the tangle of media intoxication is, after having plunged the productive economy into a deep crisis, to justify to the public a huge transfer of public funds to the death industry.” The call’s slogans included “No to war budgets. No to rearmament. No to the militarization of society and the economy. Military spending for social purposes. They instill fear in us and sell us `security.’” The EU’s promotion of the ludicrous “72-hour survival kit” was cited as the best example of the latter statement.
