In a speech at the parliament yesterday, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz especially attacked the major opposition party, Alternative for Germany (AfD), for opposing new and more weapons deliveries to Ukraine. Merz claimed that diplomacy, as the AfD advocates, has been exhausted, and declared that now is the time for more military support to Ukraine, which he is committed to providing, with more weapons.
Merz insisted that from the very beginning the government’s work had been dominated by Russia’s attacks on Ukraine. However, he had not heard a word about this from AfD leader Alice Weidel. Merz proclaimed that Germany would continue to support Ukraine, ostensibly in order to secure peace, freedom and prosperity in Germany.
