Cardinal Augusto Paolo Lojudice’s interview in La Stampa today follows statements by Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin to Italian state television channel Raidue on July 19, in which he characterized the situation in Gaza as “a war without limits,” and called for clarity on the attack on the church. He did not rule out the possibility that it was not “a mistake.”
The investigation promised by Israel must in fact determine “whether it was really a mistake, which can be legitimately doubted,” or “whether there was an intention to directly target a Christian church, knowing how much Christians are an element of moderation within the Middle East context. Now an investigation will have to determine whether Tel Aviv really made a mistake and also in relations between Palestinians and Jews,” explained the Vatican Secretary of State. And if so, what would be evident “once again, [is] a desire to eliminate any element that could help achieve at least a truce and then peace.”
