Putin Again Cites History of U.S.-Russian Collaboration Against Britain

Russian President Vladimir Putin returned to the theme that he spoke about with U.S. President Trump last week; Russia’s support of the U.S. during the American Revolution and the Civil War. As TASS reported, he told Russian television host Pavel Zarubin: “We have always had, for a very long time, very good and special relations with the United States,” as the two countries were able to find things that bonded them together. “We supported their aspirations for independence from the U.K. We actually supplied weapons. We helped them with money. Afterward, we supported the North [Union] during the North-South war. So in this sense we found things that united us.”

Yury Ushakov had included, in his readout from the Trump-Putin phone call on July 3, that Putin had congratulated the U.S. on its (then upcoming) 4th of July celebration, and had brought up the Russian aid to America during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.
