Russian President Vladimir Putin traveled to Severodvinsk in the Arkhangelsk region, yesterday, to preside over the flag raising ceremony for the newly commissioned Borei class ballistic missile submarine Knyaz Pozharsky, at the Sevmash shipyard where it was built. “Today, there are more than 70 vessels at various stages of construction at Russian shipyards. Here at Sevmash alone, six new nuclear submarines are scheduled to be built by 2030,” Putin said. “We will fully implement our plans to create a modern, powerful Navy, capable of ensuring Russia’s security and defending our national interests across all areas of the World Ocean. There can be no doubt about this,” he added.
Later, Putin chaired a meeting on the development strategy for the Russian Navy’s submarine forces. He reported that five Borei class submarines have been handed over to the fleet in the last six years—out of eight now in service—with two under construction and two more planned. “Increasing the strategic submarine force is among our priority areas,” he said. “Naturally, the priority in it is the construction of strategic submarine missile carriers, one of the crucial components of our nuclear ‘triad’ that, I repeat, allows Russia to maintain a balance of forces in the world.”
