A Russian delegation of energy companies and experts led by Energy Minister Sergei Tsivilev is in Niger holding discussions on economic cooperation, including in the energy sector.

Following a meeting between President of the Niger General Abdourahamane Tiani and Tsivilev, who is also chairman of Russia’s joint intergovernmental committee with the countries of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) on July 28, it was announced that a memorandum of understanding was signed to strengthen cooperation in the field of civil nuclear power and uranium mining. The MOU also provides for the training of Nigerian professionals in the energy, agriculture, health and education sectors. This includes training of engineers at Russian universities.

At the end of the meeting, Tsivilev stressed that Niger was its first official destination as chairman of the committee. “We have had dynamic discussions with our Niger counterparts. Our teams are already working to realize the opportunities identified in several areas,” said Tsivilev. For his part, President Tiani said he would appoint a joint committee co-chairman from the joint commission in the near future in order to structure exchanges and speed up joint projects.
