The Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post on July 22 published an opinion piece by an Indian author, calling the recent meetings of officials of China and India a “thaw, and not a breakthrough” as of yet, because of the absence of signals of economic cooperation or joint development. While discussing many angles conducing to this “thaw”—including recent U.S. embraces of Pakistani military officials—the piece raises the issue of what is actually technology transfer: “India can emerge as a vital market for tech hardware, infrastructure equipment, and machinery.”
The same path has been brought up before in Chinese publications, but it has not happened. The “Made in India” policy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government can be directly aided by Chinese companies investing in technology transfer in such fields as electric vehicles, electronic and telecommunications equipment, and rail technologies—producing Indian exports to China as well.
