Which Direction Will Humanity Choose?

“Two systems are before the world.… One looks to pauperism, ignorance, depopulation, and barbarism; the other in increasing wealth, comfort, intelligence, combination of action, and civilization. One looks towards universal war; the other towards universal peace.”
Those words, written in 1851 by American System economist Henry C. Carey as he contrasted the British colonial system with the American System, are perhaps the most apt description of the moment unfolding on the stage of history today, in which a new, post-colonial system is beginning to emerge around and through the efforts of the Global Majority, as the post-war system of geopolitics, Wall Street, and war rapidly disintegrates.
In remarks to the 117th meeting of the International Peace Coalition on Friday, August 29, Schiller Institute founder Helga Zepp-LaRouche emphasized the importance of voices from that Global Majority being brought prominently to the fore. This is exactly what is happening right now in Tianjin, China, as more than 20 world leaders convene at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization meeting, set for August 31-September 1. In preparation for that visit, Russian President Vladimir Putin gave a written interview to Xinhua in which he outlined the importance of the Russia-China relationship in shaping a new “just, multipolar world order, with a focus on the nations of the Global Majority.” Putin emphasized that “a major element of this global vision is the creation in Eurasia of an architecture of equal and indivisible security, including through close cooperation among SCO member states.” Part of achieving this, he said, will be the reform of the IMF and World Bank: “It is essential to end the use of finance as an instrument of neo-colonialism, which runs counter to the interests of the Global Majority.”
The SCO meeting—on the sidelines of which bilateral meetings will be held among Presidents Xi, Putin, Prime Minister Modi and others—will be followed on September 3 by a commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, and on September 3-6 by the Vladivostok Eastern Economic Forum, at which thousands of delegates from more than 35 countries will meet on the theme, “The Far East: Cooperation for Peace and Prosperity,” with development of the Arctic playing a prominent role. Cooperation in building a new kind of future for humanity, including construction of the long-discussed Bering Strait Tunnel, is exactly what Helga Zepp-LaRouche is proposing could be discussed by Xi, Putin, Trump, were Trump to go and join the other heads of state on September 3 in Beijing.
Contrast this pro-human cooperation with the efforts of the colonial warmongers among the European and Western elites, who are doing everything in their power to keep their barbaric system—including, emphatically, the wars in Ukraine and Southwest Asia—going. Earlier this week, the “E3” (the U.K., France, and Germany) stepped up to do their colonial duty and initiate the “snapback” of UN sanctions against Iran, demanding Iran meet conditions which, as is well known, it cannot accept and therefore sees as nothing but a provocation. This view was stated in unequivocal terms by Iran’s UN Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani, who wrote: “The reckless decision by the E3 undermines Iran’s cooperation with the IAEA and constitutes an unnecessary and provocative escalation. If unchecked, the E3’s path will gravely damage the credibility and integrity of the Security Council and place international peace and security at serious risk.” In a similarly provocative mode, EU warhawk Kaja Kallas used the EU Foreign Ministers’ informal meeting in Copenhagen today to further push the seizing of frozen Russian assets in Europe to fund defense in Ukraine, while the U.S. State Department notified Congress of a new tranche of weapons sales to Ukraine, financed by Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, and Foreign Military Financing from the United States.
And there is the horrific situation in Gaza, about which Zepp-LaRouche insisted to the IPC meeting: “If the whole world community is proving unable to stop a genocide which is going on in front of the eyes of the entire world … I think that is the end of civilization, if you can call it civilization after this. So it’s the last chance.” All eyes will be on the UN General Assembly as it convenes in September, as to whether we as a world community can activate under the rubric of the Uniting for Peace Resolution 377 to stop the genocide.
What is at issue here is human evolution. Can we overcome the backwardness of the colonial system, which treats human beings as beasts? Can we create a new system that upshifts humanity’s power in and over the universe as creative beings, a concept expressed in Christian theology as “man in the living image of God”?
Let us activate the “better angels of our nature” in the West, return to our founding mission, that of Henry Carey’s American System, “the tendency of which was that of elevating while equalizing the condition of man throughout the world,” and join the Global Majority, before it’s too late.
