The lengthy and delicate discussions on settling the border dispute between China and India will proceed when Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi travels to India on Aug. 18, for discussions with Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported on Aug. 13, according to RT. Doval was in Beijing last June for a meeting with Wang, who then said China-India relations have made “positive progress.”
That progress includes plans to restart direct passenger flights between the two countries next month, as well as resuming border trade after more than five years, according to press accounts.
RT noted that “Wang’s visit comes amid reports that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is planning to attend the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on Aug. 31 in the Chinese city of Tianjin.” It is a good possibility that there will be a Modi-Xi Jinping meeting on the sidelines of the SCO meeting, although there is no official confirmation yet. “In July, senior officials from Beijing, Moscow, and New Delhi showed interest in reviving the RIC (Russia-India-China) trilateral format,” RT noted.
