Merz Says Social Welfare State Can No Longer Be Financed

“The welfare state as we know it today is no longer financially viable, given our economic performance,” German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said at a Christian Democrat Party event in Osnabrück on Aug. 23. He called for making cuts from unemployment funds ("Bürgergeld") and health insurance.
