The Chair of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee Roger Wicker will visit Taiwan in August, sources say, reports the Financial Times. The visit will take place following Trump’s announcement of 20% tariffs on Taiwan (higher than those levied against Japanese and South Korean goods) and the reported cancellation of a trip by Taiwan President Lai to the U.S. en route to Latin America. (Lai’s predecessor, Tsai Ing-wen, visited New York in 2023.) FT adds that in June, the U.S. canceled a trip by Taiwan’s defense minister to the Washington, D.C. area.
Trump’s negotiations with China on a trade deal continue.
