Russia Accused of Hacking U.S. Courts Just as Trump Readies for Meeting with Putin

Just three days before the summit between Presidents Putin and Trump in Alaska, the New York Times drops what they hope will be a bombshell: Russia is suspected of hacking into the federal court filing system.

Federal officials are “scrambling” to figure out how deep this digital dumpster fire goes. While the coverage acknowledges that hackers have been in the system for years, this now “urgent matter” (as it is reportedly described by an internal memo) comes just as Trump is packing his bags for his Friday meeting in the Last Frontier.

While the hacking may be centered in New York, courts in places like South Dakota, Missouri, and even Arkansas have reportedly been affected. Judges are taking measures like not uploading sealed docs to PACER.

Politico sniffed out that a “foreign actor” has been poking around since early July. Rep. Jerrold Nadler back in 2022 even claimed that three unnamed countries had breached the system starting in 2020. Why spill the beans now? Is this a story that simply could not wait another week?

We’re left wondering: Is this hack a real threat, or just perfectly timed political theater?
