EU Demand for ‘Security Guarantees’ for Ukraine Is Not in the Real World

The seven EU leaders who met with President Trump in the White House on Aug. 18 briefed the rest of the 27 EU members on the outcome of the meeting even before flying home. According to a source quoted by ANSA, French President Macron and Italian Prime Minister Meloni gave the report.

“The reactions of Western leaders [at the White House meeting] confirm that the idea, that Ukraine has lost the war and will therefore suffer territorial losses and harsh peace terms, does not seem to have been accepted by the Europeans, who are as bellicose in words as they are cowardly in deeds,” wrote Gianandrea Gaiani, editor of Analisi Difesa.

Indeed, the European proposal at the meeting with Trump for “security guarantees” for Ukraine will never be implemented, as: 1. Russia is totally opposed to any European troops in Ukraine; 2. There are no European troops to be deployed in any event. European activism on “security guarantees” is only the latest attempt at derailing the Trump-Putin peace initiative.
