Türkiye Severs All Economic Ties, Closes Airspace to Israel

Türkiye today has severed all ties with Israel, according to media reports. U.A.E. newspaper The National, AP and others report that the measure was announced at an extraordinary session of parliament by Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan today, who said (in The National’s words) that, “Türkiye had severed all economic and commercial ties with Israel and imposed an airspace ban due to the war in Gaza,” and that Türkiye “does not allow its ships to sail to Israeli ports.”

Foreign Minister Fidan is quoted, “Israel’s reckless attacks on Gaza, Lebanon, Yemen, Syria, Iran is the clearest sign of a terrorist state mentality defying international order.”

The National also cautioned that “the scope and timing of the airspace ban were not immediately clear, as flight trackers showed Israeli commercial airlines still flying over Turkish territory on Friday [Aug. 29] on routes to Georgia and Russia.”
