Russia’s nuclear agency, Rosatom issued a statement today reporting that “massive artillery shelling” by the Armed Forces of Ukraine of the industrial zone of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, as well as facilities directly adjacent to Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, has been going on since this morning. “Injuries and destruction” averted.
A similar attack happened yesterday, the statement continued, igniting a fire around the station’s hydrotechnical installations, causing a brush fire that was stopped 700 meters from the power units. Firemen put it out, at risk to their lives, as the arriving firefighters came under drone attack aimed at preventing them from dousing the flames. “The constant shelling poses a direct threat to the physical integrity of the power plant’s critical infrastructure, which may lead to grave consequences,” it said.
