Global Majority Warns at UN Against Descent Into the 'Law of the Jungle'

“I think we are at a point in history where the moral fitness of humanity is being tested,” Helga Zepp-LaRouche began her remarks to the 121st weekly meeting of the International Peace Coalition on Sept. 26. “And one clear expression of that is what will be the outcome of the present UN General Assembly” currently underway in New York City, she stated.
As the first of two weeks of High-Level speeches and sideline diplomacy at the UNGA drew to a close, the reality is that the jury is still out on that existential question facing Mankind.
The Chinese daily Global Times aptly characterized this week’s UNGA meeting as one of “intense collisions”—over Gaza, over NATO’s continuing war of aggression against Russia in Ukraine, over the right of all nations to have a global architecture which ensures their security and development.
On the one side, Chinese Premier Li Qiang warned the General Assembly on Sept. 26 that, “should the era of the law of the jungle return and the weak be left as a prey to the strong, human society would face even more bloodshed and brutality.… Humanity has once again come to a crossroads.”
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov likewise reported to a meeting of G20 foreign ministers that the international institutions constructed so thoughtfully after World War II are now crumbling: “Refusal to adhere to the principles of the [UN] Charter reveals neo-colonial ambitions, fueling global instability and multiplying regional conflicts.” Lavrov spoke for the vast majority of the UN’s 193 member states when he decried “the unprecedented and horrific humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, [which] has already claimed 65,000 lives.”
On the other, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu put on a shocking display of aggressive bestiality—to a hall abandoned by hundreds of delegates from nations around the world—in which he claimed that there is no starvation in Gaza, and that Israel has provided 3,000 calorie/day diets for everyone for the last two years. He thumbed his nose at the decision of the International Court of Justice, and the finding by other UN bodies that intentional genocide is in fact being committed by his government. And he proclaimed, once again, that he would never, ever allow a sovereign Palestinian state to be established—confident in the backing he receives for that policy from London and Washington, in particular, as can be seen in their active promotion of the Tony Blair plan for Gaza.
If it is not to be the law of the jungle, then a system of international law is going to have to be reestablished derived from underlying principles—such as those outlined in Helga Zepp-LaRouche’s Ten Principles—a system which will foster the upward path of all nations and all peoples. Only so will we be able fulfill Abraham Lincoln’s challenge: “With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in … to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations.”
