“The rejuvenation of the Chinese nation is unstoppable and humanity’s cause of peace and development will prevail!” So, begins Global Times Sept. 4 editorial, citing comments made by President Xi Jinping in his Sept. 3 speech before the military parade in Tiananmen Square. Remarking on Beijing’s celebration of the 80th anniversary of the defeat of Japan in World War II, it said that the “grand military parade ... marked the first of its kind since China embarked on a new journey of advancing Chinese modernization ... serving as a firm declaration of the Chinese nation’s resolve to safeguard peace and justice. The attendance of 61 foreign heads of state, heads of government, senior representatives of relevant countries, leaders of international organizations, and former political figures reflected the international community standing shoulder to shoulder with China in upholding global fairness and justice.”
Of particular note is their location of the secret ingredient of China today: “The victory 80 years ago marked a historic turning point won through the tremendous sacrifices of the Chinese people. The Great Wall of steel, built with flesh and blood, not only ended the tragedy of foreign invasions that had plagued modern China but also planted in the hearts of ordinary people the seeds of resilience and self-strengthening.”
Quoting from the presentation by head of state Xi Jinping—"At all times, our hearts must be with the people, our work must be for the people, and we must do our best to improve the well-being of all the people”—it called those words “a profound response to the truth that ‘justice will prevail; peace will prevail; the people will prevail,’ as well as a firm commitment to the international community.”
