Egypt and Pakistan Foreign Ministers Discuss Deepening Ties at UN Meeting

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Pakistani Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar held a meeting on Sept. 24 on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. The meeting takes on a special importance, since it follows the Saudi Arabia and Pakistan’s announcement of signing a Mutual Security Pact, which includes making Pakistan’s nuclear deterrent available to Saudi Arabia. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty on Sept. 18 had congratulated his Pakistani counterpart following the pact signing on Sept. 17. The Egyptian minister also visited Saudi Arabia on Sept. 18.

The meeting at the UN reflected “the depth of relations between the two countries, with both ministers noting tangible progress in recent years,” said a statement by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry. They also reaffirmed their determination to expand cooperation across multiple fields.

The regional crisis was at the top of their discussions, especially the Israeli genocide in Gaza, where they committed to cooperate closely. They underscored their rejection of escalation, calling for collective action through the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
