Foreign Guests To Attend Ethiopian Dam Inauguration on Sept. 9

Kenya’s President William Ruto will be the guest of honor at the inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on Sept. 9. The dam has been already operating with six turbines and tomorrow the remaining seven turbines will be activated, producing the full power of over 5 GW.

Whereas Ethiopian authorities reiterated that the dam represents no threat to Nile water flowing into Sudan and Egypt, as it will be used only for power production, external influences push Cairo and Khartoum to keep calling it a “threat.” Western media, instead of highlighting the positive changes brought by the dam, chose to play the geopolitical conflict. Exemplary is the City of London, through its Financial Times mouthpiece today, running the headline “Africa’s Largest Dam Triggers Alarm Down the Nile”. In the article, however, not only is the above consideration reported, but also Ethiopia Foreign Ministry spokesman Nebiat Getachew is quoted explaining that through its regulating function, the GERD will prevent flooding and the ensuing evaporation in Sudan, thus increasing water flow to Lake Nasser in Egypt.
