German Foreign Minister on Strong NATO Response to Russian ‘Provocations’

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has threatened Russia with a strong response from NATO, in light of recent incidents involving drones in European airspace. The latest border violations show, he claimed, “that Russia only understands one language. And that is the language of strong defense of European interests and the interests of freedom,” speaking on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. “Russia must know that we, NATO, are capable of a flexible response at any time,” he added.

Wadephul made particular reference to recent incidents in Denmark, where drones had been sighted at several airports in what he called a “hybrid attack.” However, according to their own statements, the Danish authorities do not yet have enough information to name the perpetrator. In a statement issued by its embassy in Denmark, Russia denied allegations that it was responsible for the drone deployment.

Another member of the government cabinet, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, joined in the sabre-rattling, stating at a space conference in Berlin that Russia’s space activities pose a growing threat. “Russia and China have expanded their capabilities for warfare in space rapidly over the past years: They can disrupt satellite operations, blind satellites, manipulate or kinetically destroy them,” he stated.
