Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke on important matters for over five hours on September 25, according to Russian media accounts. They discussed their important bilateral relationship and cooperation on nuclear energy. Lukashenko also attended the Global Nuclear Forum on September 24. Lukashenko has also proposed that Belarus build a second nuclear reactor in the east of Belarus which could also provide electricity to Zaporozhye.
Lukashenko indicated prior to their meeting that he may be transmitting important information on the situation in the U.S., after Trump’s more negative statements with regard to achieving peace in Ukraine. It is not known exactly what Lukashenko said, but he adopted an upbeat tone coming out of the meeting with Putin.
Lukashenko indicated that there were already “good proposals on the table” regarding the Ukraine war which had been presented to President Trump in Anchorage, and that Zelenskyy should accept them. Talking to reporters afterwards, he said, “I understand Trump; his tactics are this: press, retreat, retreat, press. Sometimes he goes all-out. He’s a rebel. I’m not much different from Trump in this regard, and I call myself a Trumpist.”
He also expressed confidence that Russian President Vladimir Putin respects Trump very much. “He respects him no less than I do,” Lukashenko said.
