Nigeria Endorses China's Global Governance Initiative

On Sept. 1, the second and final day of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization meeting in Tianjin, China, host President Xi Jinping issued a Global Governance Initiative (GGI), involving five principles to guide the emerging multilateral world forward.

On Sept. 11, the Nigerian Foreign Ministry issued an endorsement of Xi’s GGI, welcoming it as a “valued platform” from which to proceed. “The Federal Republic of Nigeria conveys its appreciation to the Government of the People’s Republic of China for launching the new Global Governance Initiative (GGI),” Foreign Ministry spokesman Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa wrote. “As one of Africa’s largest economies and an active participant in multilateral diplomacy, Nigeria views the GGI as a valuable platform for advancing shared priorities, including reform of the United Nations, inclusive governance in emerging domains such as artificial intelligence, cyberspace, and outer space, and the promotion of equitable development.”

After further noting that the GGI aligns with the African Union’s Agenda 2063, Imomotimi said that “Nigeria remains committed to working collaboratively with partners across the Global South to foster consensus, strengthen regional cooperation, and contribute meaningfully to a sustainable and equitable global order.”
