In what he calls a “letter … to all NATO nations and, the world,” U.S. President Donald Trump writes that he is ready to sanction Russia and China, once other NATO countries sign on to the policy.
“I am ready to do major Sanctions on Russia when all NATO Nations have agreed, and started, to do the same thing, and when all NATO Nations STOP BUYING OIL FROM RUSSIA,” Trump says. “As you know, NATO’S commitment to WIN has been far less than 100%, and the purchase of Russian Oil, by some, has been shocking! It greatly weakens your negotiating position, and bargaining power, over Russia. Anyway, I am ready to ‘go’ when you are. Just say when?”
Is Trump calling the bluff of those Europeans who insist on continuing the fighting in Ukraine, while relying on the U.S. to support it logistically? Is he actually in favor of greater sanctions on Russia (as his recent treatment of India suggests). Parsing Trump’s statements isn’t always easy.
