Today’s telephone discussion between U.S. President Donald Trump and China’s President Xi Jinping was wide-ranging, substantive and forward-looking, as the readouts from both parties make clear—good news for all but the warmongers.

President Trump posted his report on Truth Social: “I just completed a very productive call with President Xi of China. We made progress on many very important issues including trade, fentanyl, the need to bring the war between Russia and Ukraine to an end, and the approval of the TikTok deal. I also agreed with President Xi that we would meet at the APEC Summit in South Korea, that I would go to China in the early part of next year, and that President Xi would, likewise, come to the United States at an appropriate time. The call was a very good one, we will be speaking again by phone, appreciate the TikTok approval, and both look forward to meeting at APEC!”

The Chinese readout had a similar evaluation: “The two presidents had a candid and in-depth exchange of views on the current state of China-U.S. relations and other issues of mutual interest, and provided strategic guidance for the steady development of China-U.S. relations going forward. The conversation was pragmatic, positive and constructive.”

It reported: “President Xi pointed out that China and the United States were allies who fought shoulder to shoulder during WWII.” He noted that the families of the American Flying Tigers—the American fighter pilot squadron which participated in China’s struggle against the Japanese invaders—were invited to watch China’s military parade on the 80th anniversary of victory. “The Chinese people will not forget the valuable support from the U.S. and other anti-fascist Allied nations for China’s War of Resistance,” Xi had said.

“President Xi stressed the vital importance of China-U.S. relations. China and the United States are fully capable of helping each other succeed and prospering together for the good of the two countries and the whole world. For that vision to materialize, both sides need to work hard and in the same direction, so as to realize mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation. The recent consultation between Chinese and U.S. officials reflected the spirit of equality, respect and mutual benefit,” the readout reported.

Xi went on: “The U.S. side should refrain from imposing unilateral trade restrictions so as not to disrupt the outcomes of multiple rounds of consultation between the two sides…. The U.S. side needs to provide an open, fair and non-discriminatory environment for Chinese investors.” China’s position on TikTok was given.

The readout concluded: “President Trump said that China’s recent parade was phenomenal and beautiful. The U.S.-China relationship is the most important bilateral relationship. The two countries working together can get many great things done that are good for peace and stability of the world. The U.S. would like to have a long-term, big and great relationship with China. The U.S. will work with China on the economy and trade, and support their teams in reaching a proper deal on TikTok through consultation. The U.S. will also work with China for world peace.”
