The UN Security Council met Sept. 12 to discuss the charge against Russia for the Sept. 10 drone incursion into eastern Poland. The majority of speakers avoided the question of whether Russia conducted the attack, although Russian envoy Vassily Nebenzia carefully explained it had not. Instead the narrative was that President Vladimir Putin wants to invade all of Europe, starting with Poland. The Ukraine envoy Andrii Melnyk said it most forcefully, insisting that “tomorrow, it could be drones or even missiles falling on Berlin, Paris, or London.” He said that we have “to stop this madness before it swallows us all.” If the Security Council fails to stop this new phase of Russia’s escalation, “we are staring into an abyss of a Third World War.”
The same day, at NATO headquarters in Brussels, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and NATO commander Gen. Alexus Grynkewich announced the initiation of a new NATO deployment along the alliance’s Eastern frontiers, called “Eastern Sentry.” They went on and on about “displaying assets” and “bolstering the border” along the Eastern flank with Russia, from Norway to the Black Sea.
A joint statement at the UN against Russia was released yesterday for nations to sign. The Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Bosacki read it to UN media in advance of the UNSC meeting. TASS noted today that “merely 46 out of 193 UN member states have signed a joint declaration on Russia’s alleged involvement in a drone incident in Poland.” Bosacki repeatedly made the point that “it was no mistake.” Russia deliberately attacked Poland.
