Israel Accepts Gaza Peace Deal; Urgent Action Needed To Create a Lasting Solution
by Stewart Battle (EIRNS) — Oct. 09, 2025
In the early morning hours of Oct. 10, Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu announced that Israel has ratified the Trump agreement for Gaza. As per the agreement, Israel is set to withdraw its forces to agreed-upon lines over the coming 24 hours, and Hamas is set to release all its hostages within 72 hours. The first steps are now in motion for an end to the genocide; though it is only the beginning, and the whole world will be needed to demand that Israel uphold its commitments. Netanyahu’s reference to the deal as merely a “ceasefire” exemplifies this fact, as does his reported removal of Palestinian resistance leader Marwan Barghouti from the list of prisoners to be released. Nonetheless, it is a hopeful sign.
Beyond mobilizing to uphold this agreement, citizens must familiarize themselves with the policy of “peace through development,” in particular the LaRouche Oasis Plan for Southwest Asia. In combination with the current negotiations, this proposal could restructure the political and economic framework of the whole region, shifting them out of the hands of those hoping to sabotage them. As Lyndon LaRouche said upon the 1993 Oslo Accords breakthrough, “Get the shovels in the ground!"—right away. “The urgent thing here is that we must move with all speed to immediately get these economic development projects, such as the canal from Gaza to the Dead Sea, going, because if we wait until we discuss this thing out, enemies of progress and enemies of the human race … will be successful … in intervening to drown this agreement in blood and chaos; but now we have an opportunity. If we move fast enough to get the economic development started, we can have an agreement in the Middle East which succeeds.”
The International Peace Coalition will be holding a special meeting this Friday, Oct. 10, on this subject, highlighting where things stand and what actions should be taken next to secure a lasting peace. Be sure to join the deliberations.
At the same time as this hopeful development is occurring, however, more worrying shifts are happening with regard to Russia and Ukraine. U.S. President Donald Trump’s continued waffling over the issue of sending Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine is on the edge of sinking his previous progress in improving relations with Russia. “We have to acknowledge that the strong momentum created in Anchorage toward reaching agreements has been largely exhausted,” Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov told the State Duma yesterday, comparing U.S.-Russian relations to a building which is “cracked” and “crumbling.” Ryabkov also noted that there has so far been no response from Washington to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposal to extend the START Treaty, set to expire in February 2026.
The day before, Russian President Putin met with his Defense Ministry and senior members of the General Staff, beginning with public opening remarks by himself and Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov on the dramatic gains across all lines of contact in Ukraine. This is an unmistakable response to Trump’s continued signalling that he considers such an escalatory move as sending Tomahawk missiles a possibility. As former CIA analyst Larry Johnson summed up the last two days of events: “When you have President Putin, the Russian Foreign Ministry, and the General of the Russian Army speaking with one voice, you better pay attention.”
Even if one thinks that Tomahawk missiles sent to Ukraine will not change the underlying dynamics of the war, it most certainly will change the fragile situation between the world’s leading nuclear superpowers, and is exactly the kind of operation that Anglo-American warhawks have been trying to direct Trump into all year. Taken together with the upcoming expiration of the START Treaty in February, which restricts the deployment of nuclear weapons, and the world can quickly get into exactly the kind of step-by-step sleepwalking into war. As Helga Zepp-LaRouche has repeatedly warned, during escalations such as that, it only takes one small mistake to bring on the end of civilization.
These events are occurring amidst a much broader global context, in which the world is increasingly turning away from the “might makes right” approach of endless wars and “regime change” and moving into a new paradigm. Despite Trump’s weaknesses, and the enormous efforts being deployed to destroy any potential of him being a “peace president,” we must act on this global potential to change the orientation of the U.S. and West. A new global security and development architecture is the only solution to this period of immense upheaval, and we must not miss the moment of opportunity.
