In a statement posted to X on Oct. 11, the spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in Buenos Aires responded sharply to U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s “provocative” Oct. 9 statements, in which he bragged that President Javier Milei had “committed himself to getting China out of Argentina.” These remarks regarding China’s relations with Latin America and the Caribbean, the statement read, once again “revealed a mentality rooted in the era of the Cold War,” which continues to characterize some U.S. officials who only appear to be “guided by the spirit of confrontation and interventionism in the affairs of sovereign nations.”
Bessent, “is apparently ignorant of the fact that China has been promoting cooperation in various areas in Ibero America, always based on collaboration, equality and mutual respect and focused “on the strategic needs and interests of both sides,” aimed at promoting economic development. In contrast, the statement continues, the U.S. promotes “hegemonism and interferes in the affairs of the nations of the region.
