German Chancellor Friedrich Merz initiated a telephone discussion with Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi to discuss the recently signed Gaza ceasefire agreement. According to the Egyptian Presidency, el-Sisi reviewed the details of the agreement, as well as Egypt’s vision for the next phase, including mechanisms for implementing the accord based on U.S. President Donald Trump’s peace plan. He also stressed the importance of preserving the role and legitimacy of the Palestinian Authority and creating conditions conducive to establishing a Palestinian state in line with international legitimacy resolutions. El-Sisi also invited Merz to attend the ceremony to mark the signing of the ceasefire agreement.
For his part, Merz expressed Germany’s appreciation of Egypt’s vital role in reaching the ceasefire agreement, affirming Germany’s support for the accord. He also welcomed Egypt’s plan to host the Gaza reconstruction conference. Merz has earlier expressed the desire for Germany to co-host a Gaza reconstruction conference which Egypt has proposed earlier this year, when it presented its Gaza reconstruction program at a summit of Arab leaders.
