Cheng Li-wun, a former member of the Democratic People’s Party, won election as chairwoman of the Kuomintang party. Formerly a supporter of Taiwanese independence, Cheng now speaks of a future in which Taiwanese people can proudly say, “I am Chinese.” During her campaigning, she said that current DPP leader Lai Ching-te is advancing U.S. interests while selling out Taiwan’s future. “Taiwan must not be a sacrificial lamb on the altar of geopolitics,” she said.

“We must think of the future prosperity of the 23 million people in Taiwan, dissolve the tensions and contradictions across the Taiwan straits and make sure there isn’t war,” Cheng said in her victory speech. “This is the responsibility of all parties in Taiwan to bring the Taiwanese people true safety and security.”
