Knife Attack Kills Two at Manchester, U.K. Synagogue

A knife attack at a synagogue in Manchester, England, during the Yom Kippur prayers killed two members of the congregation. Police identified the attacker as Jihad al-Shamie, 35, a British citizen of Syrian descent, whom police killed at the scene of the attack. The attack took place on Oct. 2, at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue, during one of Judaism’s highest holidays, the Day of Atonement. Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the attack and vowed to “defeat antisemitism” in his country.

Greater Manchester Police announced that they have arrested three suspects and are treating the attack as an act of terrorism. Three other men were also injured, including one who was stabbed, a second who was struck by the vehicle the attacker used to reach the location, and a third who later went to hospital with with what police called an injury “that may have been sustained as officers stopped the attacker.”
