National Leaders Assemble for Sharm El Sheikh Summit

Some 20 national leaders are expected at Egypt’s Sharm el Sheikh summit on Oct. 13 for the signing ceremony and the meeting to be chaired by U.S. President Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. Among them are British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will also be attending. Erdogan, a vociferous critic of Israel who has backed Hamas, has ramped up Turkish involvement in talks surrounding Gaza in recent months, and is thought to have played a key role in securing Hamas’s agreement for a plan on ending the war, and planning for the postwar governance and reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, reports Reuters. Jordan’s King Abdullah II and European Council President Antonio Costa are also on the list.
