In her first address to the Japanese National Diet on Oct. 24, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announced that her government intends to resolve its territorial dispute and sign a peace treaty with Russia. She spent much of her speech addressing the economic and security concerns of Japan, reported Military Affairs, as well as other media.
“On the diplomatic front, Takaichi took a page from the playbook of the late former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, her longtime political mentor,” reported the Japan Times.
“‘Amid such (difficult) international circumstances, we must put back Japan’s diplomacy to its rightful place at the heart of the world,’ Takaichi said, borrowing an expression Abe often used. The remarks, akin to veiled criticism of her recent predecessors, were welcomed by a thunderous applause from the benches of the LDP.…
“Takaichi emphasized that China is an ‘important neighbor’ with which Japan needs to foster ‘constructive and stable’ ties and promote a ‘strategic and mutually beneficial’ relationship.”
