EU leaders met for a one-day informal summit to discuss how to strengthen Europe’s common defense and support for Ukraine. The focus was the whacky idea of building a “wall against drones” to protect against the imagined Russian drone attacks on European countries. Not only does Russia ridicule the charge, but Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also cut through the delusion: “As history has shown, erecting walls is always a bad thing.” As for support for Ukraine, their idea is to use the money stolen from Russia as a loan to Kiev.
The meeting was chaired by the President of the European Council António Costa and hosted by Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. They will continue the discussion tomorrow at a meeting of the European Political Community.
The leaders will return to both topics at the next European Council meeting on October 23-24.
The fantasy world dominating the meeting was expressed by the host, Prime Minister Frederiksen: “Europe must be able to defend itself. We need to strengthen our production of drones, of anti-drone capabilities, and this includes building up a European network of anti-drone measures that can protect and, of course, also neutralize intrusion from outside.”
Not to be outdone, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who was the first to propose a drone wall a month ago, said: “Russia tries to test us. But Russia also tries to sow division and anxiety in our societies. We will not let this happen.”
Reuters reported: “The summit’s security was beefed up by troops and anti-drone systems sent by other European countries. And all drone flights over the country have been banned until Friday,” Oct. 3.
