Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told the press on Oct. 30 that the new Burevestnik cruise missile and Poseidon torpedo weapon systems, both powered by a tiny nuclear reactor, were needed to “respond to NATO’s increasingly destabilizing actions in the area of missile defense, in particular.” She added that “systems like the Burevestnik, as the Russian leadership has repeatedly stated, their development is forced and takes place to maintain a strategic balance.” TASS further reported that Dmitry Medvedev, deputy head of the Russian Security Council, “later said that the Poseidon underwater vehicle with a nuclear power plant can be considered a Doomsday weapon.”
Sputnik reported on the analyses of two prominent military experts to further explain the enormous significance of the announcements. Yevgeny Mikhailov, a Russian political scientist and military expert, was interviewed in an article headlined “Russia’s Doomsday Weapons, Burevestnik & Poseidon, Shifted Global Balance of Power—Expert,” and said: “President Putin had informed Western partners that Russia would unveil several new types of weapons. … The Burevestnik is one of them. Many international experts had previously claimed such a weapon was impossible to build anytime soon—yet it’s already been made…. What makes it [the Poseidon] unique is that it represents a completely new generation of strategic weaponry. … Powered by a nuclear reactor, it can operate at depth indefinitely and reach virtually any point in the world’s oceans.” Sputnik explained that “That makes the Poseidon almost invulnerable to existing missile-defense systems and opens up entirely new possibilities for strategic deterrence. Both systems have definitely changed the existing balance of power, the pundit believes, referring to an unusual silence in the West that has yet to comment on Russia’s progress.”
The second military expert is analyst Igor Korotchenko, who is editor-in-chief of National Defense magazine and Director of the Center for Analysis of World Arms Trade.
