The Future Is Not Determined—Except That It Will Be a Major Departure from the Present

As we observe the tumultuous and seemingly chaotic events unfolding in the world today, it’s crucial that we dispense with all simplistic notions of how we think the world has worked up to this point. Don’t hope that the next tidbit of information that flies across your screen will finally resolve the tension, or clarify the uncertainties—it won’t. Not because there is a lack of enough information, but because the world is changing in a way that challenges the mind and tests the boundaries of the lazy thinker’s understanding.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, in his exceptionally insightful address to the Valdai Discussion Club on Oct. 2, said the following: “We have noted repeatedly that we are living in an era when everything is changing, and very rapidly at that; I would even say radically. Of course, none of us can fully foresee the future. However, that does not absolve us of the responsibility to be prepared for it. As time and recent events have shown, we must be ready for anything. In such periods of history, everyone bears a special responsibility for their own destiny, for the fate of their country, and for the world at large. The stakes today are extremely high.”

All citizens suffering from the endless cacophony and oftentimes ugliness of the news cycle, would do well to take Putin’s advice: Take up personal responsibility, not only for your own destiny, but for the world as a whole. In other words, become a true citizen.

The world awaits an official answer from Hamas on U.S. President Donald Trump’s “peace proposal” for Gaza. Negotiations are reportedly ongoing between the various factions and friendly countries involved, regarding what will certainly be an unsatisfactory next step in this bloody process. Much work remains to be done on this front in laying the groundwork for a successful outcome, a situation that cries out for the LaRouche Oasis Plan. However, Gaza and Palestine do not exist in a vacuum, so whatever happens next will not be the end of this chapter.

A case in point is the heroic Global Sumud Flotilla. Over the course of Oct. 1-2, almost all of the more than 50 ships have been intercepted by Israeli forces off the coast of Gaza, with all their passengers and aid deliveries seized. At the time of this writing, one ship still remains en route to its destination. Despite this malicious act on the part of Israel, however, an even larger response has erupted worldwide in the form of official statements and street protests, showing that this global outrage against genocide is not going away, no matter how hard certain oppressive forces try to silence it.

At the same time, Europe appears to be determined to blindly plunge itself into war against Russia, eagerly following the rules of a world that no longer exists. The final day of the EU Council summit ended on Oct. 2 with further talk and pledges for scaling up these efforts—efforts that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said “clearly show that the Brusselians want to go to war.” Worryingly, the Wall Street Journal reported that the Trump Administration will begin providing American intelligence assistance for long-range Ukrainian strikes into Russia, indicating that the administration is feeling the pressure from these war-hawks to join them in their delirium. This kind of stupidity could derail the otherwise important progress Trump has made in walking back from the danger of World War III.

Consider some additional remarks Putin made at Valdai on the undeniable emergence of a “polycentric” world system and the breakdown of today’s post-Cold War unipolar order. “[T]here has never been, nor will there ever be, a force capable of ruling the world, dictating everyone how to act, how to live, even how to breathe. Such attempts have been made, but every one of them has failed….

“But this did not bring anything good. Not a single global problem was resolved. On the contrary, new ones are constantly multiplying. Institutions of global governance created in an earlier era either ceased to function or lost much of their effectiveness. And no matter how much strength or resources one state, or even a group of states, may accumulate, power always has its limits.… Oct. 2, 2025 (EIRNS)—As we observe the tumultuous and seemingly chaotic events unfolding in the world today, it’s crucial that we dispense with all simplistic notions of how we think the world has worked up to this point. “Nevertheless, the fundamentally new global atmosphere in which the tone is increasingly being set by the countries of the Global Majority, holds out a promise that all actors will somehow have to take into account each other’s interests when looking for solutions to regional and global issues. After all, no one can achieve their goals all by themselves, in isolation from others. Despite escalating conflicts, the crisis of the previous model of globalization and the fragmentation of the global economy, the world remains integral, interconnected, and interdependent.”

Indeed, how to proceed, given this reality, is the task to be mastered by future statesmen and stateswomen. As Helga Zepp-LaRouche has also insisted, humanity sits in one boat, and only if we craft a new global security and development architecture that takes into consideration the interests of every nation will we make it out of this crisis. The will of the stronger and the recently-hyped “warrior ethos” will only bring the world more quickly to its own annihilation. But if, on the contrary, we identify the common aims of mankind and the principles upon which they are based, then we have a chance at creating a durable future—and additionally, finally securing a beautiful nation of Palestine.“Nevertheless, the fundamentally new global atmosphere in which the tone is increasingly being set by the countries of the Global Majority, holds out a promise that all actors will somehow have to take into account each other’s interests when looking for solutions to regional and global issues.
