The Venezuelan government warned the U.S. government on Sunday, Oct. 5 that “extremist” rightwing elements in Venezuela have prepared a “false flag operation … to plant lethal explosives in the U.S. embassy in Venezuela.” Telesur reported Oct. 6 that Jorge Rodriguez, head of the National Assembly and of Venezuela’s delegation for negotiations with the United States, had announced the news.
The U.S. State Department has not commented on the report as of this writing.
Rodriguez said the Venezuela government considers this to be a “serious threat,” and the warnings were delivered to the U.S. “through three different channels” themselves. The government also “warned a European embassy of these facts so that they may communicate the seriousness of this information to U.S. diplomatic personnel.” At the same time, “we have reinforced security measures in said diplomatic headquarters, which our government respects and protects,” he added.
The U.S. Embassy in Caracas has been closed since 2019, when the U.S. broke relations with the government of Nicolás Maduro, but a U.S. staff remains at the embassy, responsible for security and maintenance of the premises.
