In a posting on X on Sunday night, Oct. 5, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller lit into U.S. District Court Judge for the District of Oregon Karin Johanna Immergut. Hours earlier, Immergut had ruled that President Donald Trump can’t send National Guard troops to Portland, Oregon. Miller’s posting on X amounted to a “how dare she!” as if the only matter of law at issue were Trump’s authority as commander-in-chief.
“The President has undisputed authority under both statute and the Constitution to deploy troops, stationed in any state, to defend a federal facility from domestic terrorism or violent assault. (Just as he has the authority to dispatch any federal protective asset from and to any state),” Miller wrote.
“The Portland Police have refused to render aid and assistance to ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] officers.
