A lawsuit was filed on Nov. 26 by 22 states, charging that new federal guidelines would illegally remove entire categories of recipients from the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly known as food stamps. These new guidelines were sent to each state on Oct. 31 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The lawsuit charges that the guidelines violate federal law and USDA regulations, and even the One Big Beautiful Bill signed by President Donald Trump on July 4. According to federal law, SNAP benefits are available to all qualifying recipients who are U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents holding a Green Card. The new guidelines would illegally remove virtually all Green Card holders.
