Bolton Explains the ‘Right Way To Overthrow Maduro'

You couldn’t make something like this up. John Bolton, who was Trump’s National Security Adviser from April 2018 to September 2019, and who is currently facing 8 felony counts of unlawful transmission and 10 counts of unlawful retention of national defense information, and who famously flubbed the last attempted coup d’état against President Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela in April 2019, has just published an op-ed in the Washington Post, instructing Trump how to get it right this time.

Under the headline “This Is the Right Way To Overthrow Maduro,” Bolton writes that “the Venezuelan people have every reason to overthrow Nicolás Maduro’s repressive, corrupt, failing regime. The pervasive presence and influence of Russia, Cuba, China and Iran in Venezuela add compelling national security reasons for the United States and other Western hemisphere neighbors to help.”

However, “blowing drug-laden boats out of the water, killing their crews in the process, may thrill some of our leaders, but it will not destabilize Maduro.… Ordering the Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean brings impressive force to bear.… But to ensure necessary domestic and international support to maximize the chances of success, Washington needs to do far more than it has already.”
