Almost unnoticed, tests for a potential breakup of the so-called “Brandmauer” (firewall) against the German AfD party have gone on in the European Parliament. For the third time, a majority vote including the “Patriots for Europe” group of parties, which includes AfD, has defeated bills or actions filed by the EU Commission or components of the so-called “Ursula Majority,” referring to EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
This is a sign of the times and could prelude a future change in the German political landscape, where political agendas will be dictated by a post-Ukraine war scenario.
The latest such development was on Nov. 20, at a meeting of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affair, where the Commission had presented a mission to Italy to investigate the “State of Law”: functioning of the justice system, freedom of speech, etc., a politically motivated, intrusive action that the EU has systematically used against inconvenient member states, such as Hungary.
