Speaking on Friday, Oct. 31, President of Ghana John Dramani Mahama “called for the establishment of a fairer and more inclusive economic order that reflects the realities of the interconnected world,” according to a post on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. The post, which provides no direct quotes, stated that Mahama also “emphasized that the relationship between the Global North and South must evolve into one of mutual respect and equal partnership.”
Mahama made his call at the Paris Peace Forum, an event “designed to deal with global governance issues,” (the way Davos deals with finance, according to its website) at a forum titled “From Bridgetown to Accra: The Visions Driving the Future of International Cooperation.” The referenced “Bridgetown Initiative” (officially the Bridgetown Initiative on the Reform of the International Development and Climate Finance Architecture) dates from 2022, and as such is not a call for “replacement” of the Imperial Old Paradigm IMF/WB system, as it is call for “reform” of the debt-service-based system, to make more palatable to its victims. In that light, the Foreign Ministry release notes that present in the Paris audience was “Hon. Celso Amorim; the Vice President for Global Economic Recovery at the Rockefeller Foundation,” a noted backer of the Initiative.
