Although the U.S. government shutdown doesn’t directly affect the operations of trains, trucking and shipping, it does affect areas of border-crossing inspections, certifications, regulatory oversight, inspections, and cargo and customs clearances.
Already, logistics operators are facing delays due to the pause in support from government offices, reported Supply Chain Digital.
Another factor to consider is the overall state of the infrastructure of the U.S.—roads, bridges, dams, etc. The Army Corps of Engineers issues a “report card” every year for the U.S. infrastructure; this year’s was a “C"—"Mediocre, Requires Attention"—"The infrastructure in the system or network is in fair to good condition; it shows general signs of deterioration and requires attention. Some elements exhibit significant deficiencies in conditions and functionality, increasing vulnerability to risk.”
