India Pivots Oil Refining in Response to U.S. Sanctions

India has responded to U.S. sanctions against the importation of crude oil from Russian companies such as Rosneft and Lukoil; the sanctions went into effect on Nov. 21.

Its major oil refinery company, Reliance Industries (RIL), has stopped importing Russian crude into its export-oriented Jamnagar refinery “a day before the deadline for accepting pre-ordered shipments under the latest round of U.S. sanctions and a month before EU curbs on products made from barrels from Kremlin-backed exporters,” reported the Times of India.

Beginning in December, “all refined products exported from the unit in the Jamnagar Special Economic Zone (SEZ) will be derived from non-Russian oil,” a spokesman said. RIL operates the world’s largest refining complex in a single location.
