Dmitry Peskov, following the Nov. 5 meeting of the Russian Security Council, answered questions about President Vladimir Putin’s remarks regarding potential Russian nuclear testing, should the U.S. resume testing. “We remain committed to our obligations. We are committed, and the President spoke about this today,” Peskov replied to a question about whether Russia’s revocation of its ratification of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty in 2023 allows for the testing of nuclear weapons, reported TASS.

Peskov emphasized that the position of President Putin on this matter is “absolutely clear and does not tolerate double interpretation.” “We remain committed to our obligations under the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. And we will not take any action as long as other countries refrain from doing so,” Peskov said. He also clarified that Putin’s instruction was not to begin preparations for nuclear trials immediately, but rather to look into the expediency of such preparations.

“We are not taking part in any arms race; we are developing our weapons systems and delivery vehicles. This is a scheduled work which does not depend on the current situation,” he said. “You know, it is impossible to develop such breakthrough technologies like ours in a couple of years. This work began long ago. That is why we are not participating in any arms races,” he emphasized.
