It’s been widely covered in the media as a Nov. 4 street incident in which Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum was groped by a drunken man as she greeted people in the streets of Mexico City, but the far more serious implications of this kind of security breach are going largely unreported. A video clip has gone viral showing a clearly inebriated man casually approaching Sheinbaum from behind, putting his arm around her, and beginning to plant a kiss on her neck—while the President’s security, which did not have her surrounded and protected in the first place, responded with almost casual slowness to the threat.
In many ways this is reminiscent of the way an attempted assassination of Argentine President Cristina Kirchner unfolded back on Sept. 1, 2022, with no real security surrounding her. That attempt failed only because the hitman’s gun jammed when he fired it at point-blank range.
